No More Duty-Free! Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Cross-Border Packages

U.S. Ends De Minimis Exemption: What Trump’s New Order Means for Canadian Shippers

Resources / The AI Shift

On July 30, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that will significantly impact cross-border trade. Effective August 29, 2025, the United States will:
    •    Eliminate the de minimis exemption for goods imported from Canada, Mexico, and other countries.
    •    Apply new duty rates to low-value international postal shipments (valued at US$800 or less).
    •    Tighten customs procedures, increasing documentation requirements for exporters.

This policy shift will raise costs, slow delivery times, and increase compliance obligations for Canadian businesses shipping to U.S. customers. Companies relying on the de minimis program should:
    •    Review product classifications and tariff codes.
    •    Adjust pricing and logistics strategies to offset added duties.
    •    Ensure shipping paperwork meets updated U.S. customs standards.
